Still Waters Run Deep

October 23 to November 21 - Zodiac Sign: Scorpio - Element: Water - Color: Green

Still waters run deep was one of my mother's favorite sayings. Another was, water seeks its own level. As do most children, I tuned her out whenever possible. It is only now since she is gone and experiencing my own children tuning me out whenever possible, that I finally get it. Events in life don't make us who we are, events reveal who we are. Currents of the past are always just below the surface of our outward behaviors. If we choose activities which are on the same vibrational level as our thoughts, we can only assume that low vibrational thoughts will attract low vibrational people and activities into our lives. So then how do we raise the bar? If thought, word, action and emotions all need to be working harmoniously to create balance, then how do we get all of the components on board?

Too many people choose to do nothing and accept an early, uncomfortable path to death rather than make an effort to live a disciplined (to exercise self-control), conscientious (higher self and ego working together) life. We meet people sleepwalking through life everyday. Until we take responsibility for the choices we make with every thought and breath, the world will not change. Whether we like it or not change begins with an individual decision to make change happen. By refusing to make difficult choices, we are then forced to suffer the consequences of mass non-action. Surprise—not making a decision is in itself a decision. Continuing to consume low vibrational foods and beverages helps to create a viscous cycle.

Where to begin. It's different for different people. For me it was cleaning up my diet that lead to higher vibrational thoughts, which in turn, created wellness in all aspects of my life. For others the path begins with meditation and a deeper spiritual connection. This is the time of year for earth's transformation from summer to winter. What an excellent time to pledge a transformation in our own life. Once you experience the higher vibration of beingness, it is more addictive than any street drug.

It is in the quiet depths of our own silence that we become aware of our breath. Possibilities come into us with each inhale. Stored toxicity is released with each exhale. What a beautiful miracle the gift of breath is yet so taken for granted. Breath is Spirit. The act of breathing is Living. How true this Sanskrit proverb; "For breath is life, and if you breathe well you will live long on earth".

Exploring the true depths of our soul is something so few of us take the time to ponder. We make excuses. We tell ourselves lies. We get angry. We feel sorry for ourselves. On and on... but what are we so afraid of? When we allow ourselves to detach from judgements or preconceived ideas about how it "should" be, it becomes easier to see the beauty of who we truly are. Once we can connect with our own deeply personal, individual part of the whole, how can we not take better care of ourselves. We are worth fighting for. (I know this is a little preachy — o-kay, this is a lot preachy.) I think this often quoted statement by Lin Chi says it best: "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill Him." In other words, If you think you can find enlightenment outside yourself, you're on the wrong path.

How can I say this — Imagine the utopia this world would be if everyone cherished themselves. Truly thought they were worth the effort of eating right, exercising, drinking pure water, breathing pure air, enlivening their spirit, pursuing emotional wellbeing and filtered every thought, word and deed through their heart. No fame, blame, or shame. Only radiant health, absolute joy, peace, wisdom and prosperity.

Everyday I talk to people who are stuck. Life should flow like a clear stream, yet these people are stagnating in habits so old and tired they can't even imagine a way out. Minds and hearts frozen in toxicity. Change is only one cleansing thought away, one deep cleansing breath away, one glass of spring water away, one green meal away. Just as the birth of our body is painful and messy so is the rebirth of the spirit. I am calling for a leap of faith by everyone reading this. It has been said that people too weak to follow their own dreams will always find a way to discourage yours. If you focus on your path, believing in yourself, the discouraging words from others will be nothing more than the caw of crows.

"You know that our breathing is the inhaling and exhaling of air. The organ that serves for this is the lungs that lie round the heart, so that the air passing through them thereby envelops the heart. Thus breathing is a natural way to the heart. And so, having collected your mind within you, lead it into the channel of breathing through which air reaches the heart and, together with this inhaled air, force your mind to descend into the heart and to remain there." —Nicephorus the Solitary

For next year's newsletters I will focus more on science and hard facts, favorite product profiles and cautionary tales of not so favorite products and of things to be wary of However, I feel without a foundation in self awareness, the science of this and of that is nothing more than "a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury but signifying nothing". Saving our planet seems like an overwhelming task. That is why it makes good sense focus on our health. That is something we can do. Every positive step we take to heal ourselves is a positive step to heal our planet. We only need to see the ripple to know a drop of water has hit the pond. Please join me — all wide-eyed optimists welcome.

"We travel together. Passengers on a little spaceship dependent on its vulnerable supplies of air and soil; all committed for our safety to its security and peace, preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and I will say the love we give our fragile craft."— Adlai Stevenson
